Cho Talks about “Flash Forward,” Sulu

Cho Talks about “Flash Forward,” Sulu

October 1, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

Actor John Cho is in an enviable position for a young actor in Hollywood these days–he’s part of two potentially hot franchises that could keep him working for several years. One is on television where he plays Dimitri Noh on ABC’s “Flash Forward” and the other is on the big-screen where he took over for George Takai as Sulu in this summer’s “Star Trek.”

However, if you tuned in to last week’s series premiere of “Flash Forward,” you already know that Cho’s time on the show could be limited. When the world flashed forward, Noh had no vision, indicating that the character could be dead by the end of the first season.

But does that necessarily mean that Cho’s time on the show will be done by the end of season one?

“Yeah, I don’t know,” Cho tells SciFi Wier. “Listen, all I know is that, … First of all, I don’t know when [a Star Trek sequel is] going, and if it’s going. I’m pretty sure it’s going, but I don’t know for sure, and I don’t know how long. I don’t know if my character will live on FlashForward. There’s a lot of question marks. The thing that I do know is that both sets of producers want the other project to happen. So you start from a place of good will. I’m pretty confident that we can work through whatever situation comes up. I think they feed one another.”

Cho also says that with “Forward” he’s not sure yet of the final fate of his character.

“Well, I don’t know if he’s going to die, and it’s an issue,” Cho says, adding: “In features, typically you know the ending, and you work from the ending. You know where the characters starts and where the character ends, and you’ve got to figure out a way to connect the two. I only know the beginning at this point. I was worried about playing that, although it sort of solved itself. It’s playing out very naturally, where we just sort of go with each development as it comes. … Unless, of course, there’s some big revelation. … I’ve heard that people think I may be an evil mastermind behind it all. That would be confusing if it were a later development like that. So far, so good.”

“Flash Forward” airs tonight on ABC.

I just figured Cho’s character was written that way just in case the actor needed an out for future Trek features. I know Paramount can be a bit possessive of their stars (property), particularly those involved with Trek….just ask all previous major cast members from past Trek products.

I already found myself flash forwarding through the drama bit bits with the agent and wife. I bet Cho some baby’s daddy.
