SciFi Wire Lists Options for “Gravity”

SciFi Wire Lists Options for “Gravity”

September 17, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

defyinggravityU.S. fans are still wondering just when and if they’ll get to see the final episodes of the season for “Defying Gravity.”

ABC says they’re looking for options to air the final episodes of the season, but with the fall premieres looming, space on the schedule isn’t all that open.

Today SciFi Wire has four options that U.S. fans have when it comes to the future of the series.

Now the question is, what’s going to happen to those, and when will U.S. fans get to see them?

Publicly, ABC says it’s trying to find room on the schedule for the unaired episodes, according to FutonCritic.com, and that’s certainly one option. According to industry insiders we checked with, though, there are several other possibilities that are more likely for the Fox-produced show:

Option 2: Fox will sell Defying Gravity to a cable network, using the unaired (and therefore “new”) episodes as an incentive. This is exactly what happened when Fox sold Firefly to our parent company, Syfy, a few years ago. In that case, fans will probably have to wait 6-12 months to see the remaining episodes.

Option 3: ABC will run them online as a stunt to drive traffic to its Web site, just as it did with the canceled show Daybreak. At least this way ABC will get some bang for its buck, and the upside for fans is that they could see the unaired episodes as early as this fall season.

Option 4: Because retail sales are likely to be more lucrative than an online stunt, Fox might negotiate with ABC to hold the episodes for the DVD market, in which case fans are back to the 6-12-month timeline.

Right now, the final episodes will air on CTV, so it’s possible that fans can find them via alternative methods as well…such as YouTube or BT Airlines.

I’m seeing bittorrent sites from the CTV feed getting really popular, that or ABC needs to put it up on its website or on hulu, thank god for hulu.

How an about option 5: Tell us what Beta is and then just cancel the show.

That option would get my vote!

CTV airs the show on Friday evenings on the same timeline that ABC was airing them in the US. This week’s episode is #9.

Forget waiting 6-12 months. We know a way to see them now. All hail BT Airlines!

I think we need to copyright BT Airlines… That was our invention and has become the defacto ref to Bit Torrent. LOL
I hear that term everywhere now.

BT airlines. hmm never heard that reference and I’ve been using BT links for about a year. Can’t be that ubiquitous.
