Zombie Wants To Remake “The Blob”

Zombie Wants To Remake “The Blob”

August 31, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 3 Comments

Director Rob Zombie wants to revisit another horror classic and give it his own unique spin.

The director, who rebooted the Halloween franchise and gave us the modern version of several other horror films, told Variety last week that he’d like to put his own spin on the Blob.

” My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing, that’s the first thing I want to change, That gigantic Jello-looking thing might have been scary to audiences in the 1950s, but people would laugh now. I have a totally different take, one that’s pretty dark,” he said. “I intend to make it scary, and the great thing is, I have the freedom once again to take it in any crazy direction I want to. Even more than `Halloween,’ where I had to deal with accepted iconic characters like Michael Myers and Laurie Strode. `The Blob’ is more concept than specific storyline with characters, so I can go nuts with it.”

Zombie reportedly would write and direct the new version of the movie with a budget of around $30 million.

“The Blob” first oozed onto movie screens in 1958 and was remade in the early 80’s.

This is a perfect movie for a remake as it was never good but just simple 50’s fun. Definitley still a classic. My only complaint is that will all the good original material out there why is almost everything being done now a remake? This is a slow side down hill.

The BLOB in 3-D! Sans Steve McQueen? Who remembers Kaltiki? That one gave me nightmares. But I was 10 at the time I saw it on TV. The new BLOB could be similar to John Carpenter’s remake of The Thing.

As far as remakes, it takes bean-counter justification to spend $$$. They want numbers upfront before they invest. Very few take a risk on an untried concept.
