Morales Talks About “Caprica” Role

Morales Talks About “Caprica” Role

August 6, 2009 By Mike Hickerson Leave a Comment

When it comes to playing his role as Joseph Adama, actor Esai Morales says he looks to the work done by Edward James Olmos as a guide. Morales is taking on the role as the father to Olmos’ William Adama in the upcoming SyFy series, “Caprica.”

“I don’t have the same gravitas as he does,” Morales told SciFi Wire. “He’s quite a character to play on. I got half the genes. I gave him half of his gravelly voice. You should hear his mother, though.”

However, Morales says there is a fine line to walk in looking to Olmos’ work for inspration too much.

“It shouldn’t be about that, because that’s one joke that would get old quick,” Morales said. “You know?”

Morales admitted that when he was approached about a role in the upcoming prequel spin-off that his mind went first to the campy series from the late 70s and not the just-completed revival.

“I had no idea,” he said . “It thought it was … Lorne Green [who starred in the original series]. Do I get a cape? Actually, I have some friends who asked if I get to wear one of those cool spacesuits. … I’ve seen a couple of episodes here and there. … They said, ‘Listen, we’d almost prefer you not see that, because we don’t want every other thing to be a nod and a wink to the show.'”

As for what’s coming up when we get to see “Caprica” early next year, Morales hints that Joseph’s character-arc is “a real neoclassic Greek tragedy arc.”

The pilot of “Caprica” is available on DVD and the series debuts next year on SyFy.
