SyFy Green Lights “Alphas”

August 5, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 5 Comments

After two years of pitches and meetings, the 90-minute movie and potential pilot for “Alphas” has finally got a green light from SyFy.

The project, which began its development journey under the working title of “Section 8” is by writers Zak Penn and Michael Karnow and follows a team of ordinary citizens who possess hyperdeveloped neurological abilities.

The idea was originally pitched to executives at NBC because of a first-look deal with producer BermanBraun Television, reports the Hollywood Reporter.  When the Peacock passed on the show, the concept was shopped around town before being delayed by last year’s writers’ strike.

After the strike, the concept was tweaked and a bit and shopped more, finally getting a green light from SyFy.

“What we loved about this idea is that it played into a new way of approaching the superhero genre: the idea of ordinary people who have one slightly extraordinary feature about them and are singularly not so special but together can do extraordinary things was very attractive,” Syfy executive vp original programming Mark Stern said.

Yawn, Heroes with a dilution of abilities? SciFi seem to be stuck in a rut of using other shows as a basis for their own.

I agree. I read this and immediately thought… they’re rebooting ‘Heroes’?

Originally, (when it was under the name “Section 8”) it was going to be aired on ABC, but that nasty writers’ strike got in the way. So, SyFy is just basically picking it up from another network, kind of like what they did with “The Chronicle” a few years back.

God I am glad i am boycotting SciFi cannel due to the stupid name change. This movie/pilot sounds like a stupid shortlived show. Nothing like heros light anyone?

Heroes light might actually be good especially with no cheerleader. Or they might actually get it right unlike the producers/writers of Heroes.
