Will Aronofsky Be Too Busy for “RoboCop”?

Will Aronofsky Be Too Busy for “RoboCop”?

July 15, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Director Darren Aronofsky in on the verge of signing on to be the director of the upcoming Natalie Portman supernatural drama, “Black Swan” later this year.  And while that’s good news for the project becuase the director brings independent financing to the film and the potential involvement of Fox Searchlight, it casts into doubt whether the director will have time to work on a “RoboCop” reboot.

According to the Hollywood Reporter’s Risky Biz Blog, Aronofsky has been working with writer David Self on ideas for the new “RoboCop” film, which was scheduled to begin proudction this fall.

MGM has targeted a release date in 2011 and it’s possible the director could finish work on “Swan” and then do “RoboCop” in time for the release window.

However, sources are saying MGM is putting our feelers for a new director to helm the RoboCop project.  The studio declined comment at this time.

Part of the urgency for MGM is to get a franchise picture out in a widow when it doesn’t have many others.  Both the Bond and Borune franchises have upcoming films on the horizon, but they woudn’t be ready before the date for the new “RoboCop.”

True, we don’t need a reboot.
