If you have been a listener of our show for any length of time you know that the Green Lantern, and just who would be picked to portray him has been a topic of discussion. It may have taken awhile but now we can report that actor Ryan Reynolds is Warner Bros.’ pick to star as the “Green Lantern”.
The live-action flick based on the famed DC Comics hero is set to begin production within the next six months with Martin Campbell sitting center seat.
Reynolds beat out some tough competition that included such stars as singer-turned-actor Justin Timberlake, Bradley Cooper (“The Hangover”) and Jared Leto (“Panic Room”).
With Warner’s choice of Reynolds the actor now holds the distinction of being the only star to have been a main character in both the DC Comics and Marvel world of imagination. Reynolds starred as Deadpool in recent release of “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” and is slated to take on that role again for a movie in which Deadpool is the chief protagonist.
Being chosen by Warner Bros. and DC Comics to star as the Green Lantern is a real coup’ for Reynolds after he was initially turned down for another DC Comics character in The Flash. With his rising star quality and box office drawing ability DC sees great potential for the actor in possibly more Lantern enterprises if this first film proves successful.
One reason for the lengthy search process was that De Line, Campbell and the studio each had a different favorite among the finalists, making it difficult to come to a consensus.
If the deal is completed, it would make Reynolds the only actor to have played heroes for both Marvel and DC. He recently starred in a comic-book movie, 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” in which he played Deadpool, also known as the Merc with a Mouth. The character is being developed for a spin-off in which Reynolds will star. He also played Marvel’s vampire hunter Hannibal King in “Blade: Trinity.”
“Lantern” is Reynolds second stab at a DC Comics hero. A few years ago, he was attached to play the comic company’s speedster “The Flash.”
J^%#$ F&^#$ C&^%#^#!! What is it with casting lately?? Ryan Reynolds Superhero. Period. Although XO:W’s dismal presence can be mainly blamed on the script, Reynolds’ portaryal of Deadpool was defintiely one of the nails in its coffin. He can’t be believable, either as a wise-cracking superhero or a serious superhero.
If the script is stellar, and the director reigns him in, then maybe there’s a chance. Maybe.
