“John Carter of Mars” Casting News

June 15, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

Two major roles in the upcoming “John Carter of Mars” movie have been cast according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Taking on the title role is Taylor Kitsch, best known for his work on TV’s “Friday Night Lights” and this summer’s “Wolverine.”

Actress Lynn Collins is taking in the role of Dejah Thoris, heir to the throne of Mars’ Helium kingdom.

Based on the novel by Edgar Rice Burroughs, “Carter” centers on a civil war veteran who finds himself mysteriously transported to Mars, where his involvement with warring races of the dying planet force him to rediscover his humanity.

WHAT A JOKE. HE’S NOT MAN ENOUGH AND SHES NOT SEXY ENOUGH. PLUS THERES A CARTOON DIRECTOR DIRECTING IT AS HIS FIRST LIVE ACTION FILM. THIS MOVIE WILL SUCK. UNBELIEVEABLE THAT THEY COULD RUIN IT BEFORE FILMING EVEN STARTS.

    Oh dear gracious.

What bad casting decisions! John Carter was a man of about 30.

And John Carter of Mars was never about Carter rediscovering his humanity. Make the movie about the love between Carter and Thoris and you’re at least closer to the story.

Gotta post again. This is one of the most ridicullous casting efforts I have ever seen. That could not hold John Carter’s jock. He looks like a douche. Freaking unbelievable. And the girl, not that attractive, only average at best.

Maybe I am wrong as it’s been years since I read the books, but I always saw Carter as MAN, a bad ass kick your ass MAN, not some snivelling little pipsqueak that can’t even grow a beard. And Thoris, I always saw as smoking sexy hot, not some run of the mill average jane.

    EPIC FAIL!!!!!!

    Hollywood sucks!

a final note… this will be worse than Starship Troopers. Wait scratch that. It will be worse than Battlefield Earth, the worst movie adaptation or original ever made.

Whoa, don’t give up on the movie yet…With some great CGI and a decent script the movie could be fun. I agree though that the books were never about him rediscovering his humanity. John Carter was gallavanting across mars having to rescue Dejah Thoris after she was kidnapped by four-armed-green Tharks, giant spiders, great apes, etc…

Also,if you recall John Carter was no Conan the Barbarian…On the old ballatine book covers from the 70’s, the artist (not Frazetta) pictures John Carter as hairless and muscular, but no bulky Arnold type – no beard. His strength came from being Earth born… Frazetta got it wrong.. Also Taylor is close to 30…

These actors beat out some other well-knowns. Why? Cuz they cost less? Maybe the chemistry and their acting was good! I wouldnt second quess Stanton’s track record, though I would script-sweetener Chabon’s. Lets hope the right “organic” look and keeping with the honorable adventure spirit (and lack of clothing!) finally bring a project put off 80 years to the mainstream (not that it deserves it) .We Tharks are watching Andrew, and you know what we do with our captured enemies, right?
