“Harper’s Island” Moves to Saturdays

April 28, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Citing “a passionate audience for “Harper’s Island” outside its current Thursday time period borders” due to numbers of DVR playbacks and on-line streaming of episodes,  CBS has decided to move the limited run series from Thursdays to Saturdays, starting with this week’s episode.

The limited run series follows a group of people, trapped on an island with a different character being killed off each week.

The series fared well in its premiere, but has seen ratings drop off in recent weeks.

CBS said they’re looking to re-establish original programming on Saturday evenings.  Recently the network has shown repeats of its popular procedural dramas or news programs during the Saturday time slot.

However, in reality the move to Saturdays can’t be good for the show.  The big question becomes–will CBS make good on its comitment to show all 13 episodes of the series or will fans have to find out the solution to the mystery via streaming episodes or the DVD release?

It seems unlikely that they’ll play out the entire season, since the move to Saturday means that the finale would either air on the Fourth of July when nobody’s watching or skip a week and be one episode all on its own, which networks don’t generally do.

Interesting point Robin, maybe the fourth of July would be an excellent time to play a retrospect of the mystery before the final.

I enjoy the show, so it’s a bummer that it might not finish. It doesn’t have terrible numbers, so what gives?

The question is what they do in regards to a season 2. The show was never intended to have a second season, but it was intended that another show in the same format (13-ish episodes, new name, cast, scenario and maybe even genre) would follow. I wonder if that is still on the cards? I hope they try again with a “mystery event”.

Really went dark and dysfunctional there at the end. Not sure how many people have the patience to watch this all the way through, and truth be told the payback is rather small.
