NBC Moves “Kings”

NBC Moves “Kings”

April 8, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 6 Comments

Enjoy NBC’s “Kings” while you can.  It’s not long for this world.

After announcing that the series would inherit the prime Thursday at 10 p.m. slot vacated by “ER,” NBC moved the new alternate universe drama to Sunday evenings, where it premiered to lower than expected ratings figures.   Despite a big promotional campaign, the series never caught on with viewers.

Now the drama is being moved to Saturday nights for its final eight episodes, according to the Hollywood Reporter.  The final eight episodes will air on Saturdays before the (probable) inevitable cancellation.

They did have a big promotional campaign, but they never said what the series was about. The ads for it were too vague. Maybe if they advertised for it differently, more people would have watched.

The only reason I started watching it was because I saw an article for it in Sci Fi Magazine. Up until that point I had no idea it was genre. The previews for the show never conveyed that.

We talked about the show on several occasions on our Slice of SciFi show last fall after the new NBC lineup was announced. I was looking forward to it and haven’t been disappointed. It is a smartly written alternative-history piece reflecting on what the story of the reign of King Saul and a young soldier in his army named David might have been like had it occured in the 21st century C.E. instead of 1000 B.C.E.

And, Ian McShane is absolutely brilliant as the cunning King Silas (Saul) in this piece, equaling his glowing performance in HBO’s Deadwood.

Did anyone else notice that the first few episodes of KINGS aired on SciFi Channel over the weekend?

I didn’t watch, but I noticed it in the listings… wasn’t expecting that, but given that USA’s tagline is “Characters Welcome”, I wonder if it might not end up over there. Who can figure it, given the seeming lack of promotion after the premiere.
