Rumor: Pine Front-Runner for “Lantern”

March 20, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 2 Comments

How do you top playing Captain James T. Kirk in the upcoming “Star Trek” movie?

OK, maybe you can’t top playing Kirk, but actor Chris Pine is rumored to be in the running for a role that is almost as cool as the captain of the starship Enterprise.   According to IESB, Pine is rumored to be the front runner for the upcoming Green Lantern movie.

In the new Green Lantern film, Hal Jordan is a pilot who finds a powerful ring and its lantern-like battery when a spaceship crashes on Earth. Jordan is selected to succeed the craft’s dying occupant as the next Green Lantern, a galactic guardian who is a member of an interstellar corps.

According to IESB, Warner Brothers is interested in casting an actor in his late 20’s to early 30’s for the role.

Now, if he were playing Alan Scott…. THAT would be COOLER than Kirk. But, Meh one takes what one can get.

Actually it makes since if Chris Pine gets the part so he doesn’t become too typecast as James T. Kirk so everyone can see him in a different role and see him pull that off as well. Most of the others in the new “Star Trek” film are doing other things so they won’t be typecast and I think that this is something that the original cast wasn’t really allowed to do too much because of TV shooting schedules. Except for when George Takei was allowed to go and film “The Green Berets” (and who would tell John Wayne no???) most of the others were on the set. The only other actor at the time who has a small measure of success in breaking out of his role was Leonard Nimoy who played Paris on “Mission: Impossible” and as his other better known role, the host of “In Search Of”. The other question is, will Zachary Quinto, if this movie is as successful as we think it will be, be forever typecast as Spock or as Syler from “Heroes”?
