Blu-ray Review: “The Princess Bride”

Blu-ray Review: “The Princess Bride”

March 6, 2009 By S. K. Sloan 4 Comments

“When ‘The Princess Bride’ debuted in 1987 it immediately became a cult favorite and has stood the test of time for 22 years.”

On March 17, 2009 one of the most quoted films in cinematic history will become available for the first time on the high definition Blu-ray format. Can any one say: “My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”?

That’s right, after 22 years since it first appeared on the big screen “The Princess Bride,” that brilliant production from actor-turned-filmmaker Rob Reiner (“This Is Spinal Tap”), debuts in HD.

What one would think is a children’s tale (script based on and written by children’s book writer William Goldman) about a poor farmer’s daughter absconded by a nefarious prince only to be sought for rescue by her poor boy friend and his motley band of heroes, turns into a thoroughly enjoyable presentation in which all ages can become engulfed, once again, into that beautiful imaginative world created on film by Reiner and his equally motley group of actors.

“The Princess Bride” stars Robin Wright Penn as the would-be princess, Cary Elwes is her poor lover and the nefarious prince who fancies her is perfectly played by Chris Sarandon. However, the film, without doubt has always belonged to actor Mandy Patinkin and his portrayal of the swashbuckling swordsman Inigo Montoya.

The cast is rounded out with spot-on performances by Christopher Guest, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Andre the Giant, and the hiliarous lisping Peter Cook.

When “The Princess Bride” debuted in 1987 it immediately became a cult favorite and has stood the test of time for 22 years. Now old and new fans alike will be able to enjoy it all over again in stunning high definition with this new Blu-ray release.

Anybody know what special features are on this? And are they any different than the multitude of DVD versions that are already out there? Sorry, but I don’t think the visuals are going to be that much better than on the DVD (through upscaling on my Blu-ray player) to justify a purchase if there isn’t something extra special on it.

I went through two vhs copies and have a couple of dvds. One of my top five favorite movies. But have to agree with Mark on the Blu Ray.

I’ve read a few positive reviews about the blu-ray transfer quality. Fox has done a very good job recently with their catalog and The Princess Bride gets the ‘royal’ treatment. I was reluctant to add this to my collection given the original price ($33) not knowing what quality and features the release had. It also includes the regular DVD edition with many extras (for those that like all that stuff). The price has come down to around $22 and I’ll make the purchase soon. This is still a great film that the best sense of humor for the genre.

One of my favorites. The Blu-Ray is cool because it comes with the DVD version as well (hard copy, not just a download!)
