Russo Rating: 4/10
Mind numbing and nearly unwatchable
Feast was a creative breakthrough, both hilarious and disgusting. Feast II was a sloppy extension. Feast III: The Happy Finish is mind numbing and nearly unwatchable.
What exactly happened to Project Greenlight director John Gulager? Feast was an explosion of creativity, and one of the best and most original horror flicks in recent memory. When the Weinstein brothers commissioned not one, but two more installments, Gulager and Saw IV and V writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton went off the deep end.
Feast II introduced quite a few new ideas and characters. Butch lesbian bikers, used car salesmen and midgets entered the fray, and any shred of seriousness went with them. Bathroom humor was added in with the gore, and suddenly the ferociously fast, alien monsters weren’t so intense anymore.
The best part about Feast has always been the series’ ability to introduce heroic characters, only to kill them off in hilariously creative ways. Feast III is no exception. Plus the film does end on a note that will have you roaring with laughter.
However, the manic pace in which Feast II and III were shot (think a low budget Back to the Future II/III situation) makes the storyline absolutely incoherent, making for an entertaining series of moments strung together poorly. Special features include a commentary with the writers and director and a look back and Gulager following Project Greenlight.
