I really liked the show once the actual “engagement” started.

The first 10-15 minutes, however, were awful, and the first scene was some of the worst acting I’ve seen from a Whedon directed show.

From what I know about the ratings Dolllhouse will be gone soon and be replaced by another cheesy reality show.

I don’t think the actress sold the character . . . no matter how short her dress got. In nearly every scene you get the impression she is trying to act; in other words, it comes across as if she is aware she is acting. With the exception of the guy who runs the machine, the supporting cast seems pretty good selling their characters. However, the premise as explained is more annoying than interesting.

The scenes of her walking around the dollhouse are particularly painful, as her I’ve-lost-all-ability-to-think expression mirrored what was happening to me.

One more show is all they get to show me something interesting, and I don’t mean a shorter dress.

The reviewers that have given the show better reviews are the ones who have seen several episodes so I think it’s going to take a few episodes for this show to ‘hit it’s stride’. Patience…In Joss we trust. 🙂

Great premise! I can’t wait to see where Josh takes it. Kind of a female “Pretender” on steriods.

With everything else going on, I went into this knowing only that it was a Whedon project and that the pilot had been reworked. Based on Whedon, I gave it a chance.

Honestly, I thought this opening was pretty unimpressive. While I’m sure she’s a fine young woman, as an actress, I haven’t seen Ms. Dushku show in any of her work that she has the range to convincingly play a pretender type character. I hear that Echo is supposed to start having carryover in her memory and won’t be reduced to a complete blank slate each time – it would have been good to hint at that at the end of the pilot. As it is, people like me who haven’t done a doctoral thesis worth of research on this show before it ever aired are left with the impression that Echo is going to be a very flat character who has no potential to develop. That is very hard to carry a show with.

It was, largely, a yawner …

I’ll hang with it for a few episodes to see if anything develops b/c it does seem that there’s a lotta talent up there, though.

I loved it and I can’t wait for more.

Were there a few shaky spots? Sure. Was there awesomeness? Also yes. People seem to expect TV pilots to be movies these days, when they’re not. Pilots are the first chapter of a story rather than the whole thing. I mean, if it gave all the details away, why would the audience bother to come back?

If I know Whedon’s writing (and trust me, I do), then ‘Ghost’ is just the beginning of a slow build. He’s said that the first 6 or 7 episodes of a series should all be able to act as first episodes for new viewers. If you stick around for a few weeks, I bet you’ll find something that draws you in as this new imaginary world is explored a little more.

Oh, and Jarick, the Fox programming executives have publicly stated that they will run all 13 produced episodes of Dollhouse, so we’ve at least got until mid-May before the awful “reality” shows descend upon the timeslot.

I doubt that Joss can survive the Fox Friday Curse. Not one Fox program scheduled on Friday has lasted more than one season.

    It was only the PILOT.
Why are we having this conversation? We all know the story of how the pilot was tinkered with by the network. (Because, apparently, the suits at the network are easily confused…and believe that if *theyre* confused, then the audience will be as well.)
Me? I’m not judging the whole season of the show on the pilot.
I did think it was intriguing and I think if it was on FX at 10pm (better yet, on HBO or Showtime) they could go to some really interesting places with this premise.
But alas, this is not the case.
I’m not going to be ready to judge the show until after about 5 episodes.
I’ve seen it twice so far. The first time on Friday night. The 2nd time I watched *commercial free* thanks to BT Airlines. It was MUCH better without the ads breaking up the flow of the show.

It’s Joss, we have to watch!

No, seriously, from reading what Joss has said, he is aware he was working hard on character development in the beginning and he has said to hang in there it provides more interest and humor as it goes along.

The premise is intriguing, but Fox executives have messed with the creative process too much – they’ve edited out the Joss charm and witty dialog. I hope that comes back, or Dollhouse is just one of another dozen sci-fi-ish offerings on the tube.

@Digital Rob & ejdalise: I pretty much thought the exact same thing, especially that whole dance scene at the beginning. The series has promise, and could be interesting, so I’ll watch the first half of the season, and see how far its progressed.

    Plotonium is being use… Massivly!

I really like the concept. Maybe Joss should take this show to HBO or Showtime. It might be even better if he got away from Fox
