Smith Signs Three-Year “Doctor Who” Deal

February 12, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 1 Comment

Matt Smith will be the eleventh Doctor for at least three-seasons according to the British newspaper, the Sun.  Smith, who will inherit the mantle of the Doctor in 2010, recently signed a three-year contract with an option for a fourth year with the BBC.

By signing Smith, the BBC is hoping to keep the rumors of the actor’s imminent departure from cropping up between every series.  An anonymous source at the BBC says the Beeb doesn’t want Matt “doing a David and leaving when things are going great.”

Smith has yet to begin filming for “Doctor Who.”  His Doctor takes over when series five debuts in 2010.

And for those of you worried that that “Doctor Who” might be taking a longer than expected hiatus (there were rumors that it might return to the traditional classic “Who” fall slot), word from the BBC indicates that the series will return in the spring of 2010.
