Whedon Denies “Cabin In the Woods” Casting Rumors

Whedon Denies “Cabin In the Woods” Casting Rumors

February 3, 2009 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

The upcoming Joss Whedon/Drew Goddard written horror thriller “Cabin In the Woods” is picking up a lot of buzz these days.  And, according to Whedon himself, a lot of it isn’t necessarily true.

Last week, several web sites and the New York Times reported that actress Jena Malone and actor Bill Nighy were attached to the upcoming horror flick for MGM.  And while those actors may be under consideration, it appears that they have not been cast yet. Whedon debunked the rumors on his web site, saying that while he and Goddard are “fans of both those actors, neither is attached to the movie.”

“Turns out that the New York Times’s info about the plot summary and the casting of Jena Malone and Bill Nighy is completely wrong,” he wrote.

“However, they ARE attached to the Serenity sequel.” he joked. “Oh. Also, they got the plot wrong.”

Whedon did say that fans can expect to see characters with emotions, dialogue and “a bunch of different people will play the part of Bob Dylan.”

And while these rumors may be just that, Malone could be a good choice for the film. She’s already shown she has the chops for acting in horror films with last year’s “The Ruins.”

I don’t know why the timeline on this is so hard for people to get right, but “last week, several web sites and the New York Times reported” isn’t quite right.

Back on January 23/24, it was noticed that StudioSystem had listed 4 actors as being cast, with The NY Times revealing that Malone and Nighy were the additional two.

On Jan 24, Joss denied this information.

Nothing else happened until Jan 31 when Blood Disgusting, without ever mentioning any of the above even in passing, reporting a rumor that Malone had been cast, which was then picked up by a number of other sites.

    Since then, there’s been nothing.

to Sean: You are correct. Author of this article got got title mixed up with an earlier one that used the film’s name in a play on words.
