Actor Will Smith recently told Film School Rejects that the upcoming American version of “Oldboy” won’t be a remake of the popular anime title, but will instead look to the original manga by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi.
“We’re looking at that right now. Not the film though, it’s the original source material. There’s the original comics of ‘Oldboy’ that they made the first film from. And that’s what we’re working from, not an adaptation of the film” Smith said.
Both the manga and the anime film have dark aspects to them, though the anime went darker in some areas.
Steven Spielberg is producing the project with Smith. A search is on for the screenwriter for the American version.
