Fox Announces Mid-Season Schedule

November 7, 2008 By Mike Hickerson 7 Comments

Many Joss Whedon fans may be feeling deja vu when they hear when his latest series will air on Fox.   The highly anticipated mid-season replacement, “Dollhouse” will air on Friday evenings at 9 p.m. EST starting on February 13.   Fox is creating a block of sci-fi programming on Friday evenings and will move “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” from Mondays at 8 p.m. EST to Fridays at 8 p.m. EST.

The scheduling of the series may create a bit of a dilemma for genre fans.  SciFi’s popular SciFi Friday also airs that evening and while both shows won’t be in direct competition with the final episodes of “Battlestar Galactica,” there could be a conflict between “Dollhouse” and SciFi’s 9 p.m. offering.

Also, Whedon fans may be concerned that Fox is showing the premiere on a Friday evening, when audiences are typically lower.  Fox is not showing the premiere behind juggernaut “American Idol,” ensuring that audiences will at least sample the show before it moves to its Friday time slot.   In a positive note, “Dollhouse” will still be a premium series along the lines of “Fringe.”  The premium shows offer fewer commercials breaks per hour and are supposed to offer more storytelling time.   So far, the strategy has been successful for Fox with “Fringe.”

Meanwhile, Fox is building the rest of its mid-season schedule around TV’s highest-rated show, “American Idol.”    That is good news for freshman series, “Fringe” which retains its 9 p.m. EST time slot on Tuesdays.   With a strong lead-in from “Idol,” “Fringe” could see its audience expand and offer comeptition to CBS’s “The Mentalist.”

In other moves, Fox will shift “House” to Monday evenings at 8 p.m. EST.   The long-awaited return of “24” will reside in its Monday at 9 p.m. EST time slot.  Also, David Borenaz’s “Bones” moves the extremely competitive Thursday at 8 p.m. EST time slot.

So they’ve moved all of my favourite shows into timeslots where I will be unable to watch them live…. perfect…

This is a good move for Terminator.

And the article is wrong, none of this will compete with Stargate: Atlantis which ends it’s season and series on Jan 9th.

@Gazer: “So they’ve moved all of my favourite shows into timeslots where I will be unable to watch them live…. perfect…”

Seconded. If I didn’t know any better, I’d suspect there was some conspiracy among the networks to kill all of their Monday programming. Even people lucky enough to have newer DVRs can only record two shows at a time. If not for Hulu, I wouldn’t be able to watch several shows due to schedule conflicts. As it is now, it usually takes me until Wednesday or Thursday to catch up. :-\

MY problem with watching shows on Fridays is that I’ve got TOO MUCH to watch. “Stargate Atlantis”, “Sanctuary”, “Numb3rs”, “Monk”, “Psych”, and now this too? Fortunately, though, most of the shows I watch that day are on cable, so they’re shown more than once a night. But usually means staying up until or past midnight.

Kyle, I have the same problem as you, but worse. I’m *never* home on Friday night, so my DRV gets a workout as it is. I’m going to have to choose what to record and what to watch online. This is the epitome of suck.

Moving Terminator from Monday is a good move, but I’m not sure Friday is the answer. They just picked it up for a full season, but moving it to Friday tells me they don’t care to see it succeed. Typically, Fridays are the kiss of death for network series.

If you’re problem is only 1 DVR then get more! 😉

Seriously, I have 2 dual tuner DVRs in my main viewing room and they often are all recording away. And I’ve got a 3rd DVR in another room just in case I need to spill something over to it.
