With “Dark Knight” taking in close to a billion dollars at the world-wide box-office, a third installment with the Caped Crusader seems like a no-brainer.
And while we’ve heard rumors for months now on who could be the next rogue the Batman battles, it appears all the speculation on a third installment may be premature.
Last week at Spike TV’s Scream Awards, several people associated with “Dark Knight” downplayed the possibility of a next Batman movie.
“I can’t speak to that right now,” producer Christopher Roven said. Â “We are excited about the possibility of something coming together, but we’re definitely in the stage where we’re just thinking about it. [Director] Chris [Nolan] is really the one who is thinking on it.”
Actor Gary Oldman joined in, denying reports about a third movie. “There’s no rumor,” he said. “I haven’t heard a thing [about a third movie]. I’ve heard the stuff being thrown around online, but nothing from official sources.”
But the most telling comments came from director Christopher Nolan, speaking to the Los Angeles Times.
“Is there a story that’s going to keep me emotionally invested for the couple of years that it will take to make another one? That’s the overriding question,†said Nolan. “On a more superficial level, I have to ask the question: How many good third movies in a franchise can people name?â€

With all due respect P.C. but are you serious about Star Trek III? But I will add Revenge of the Sith (Was the best out of the new Trilogy but that aint sayin much.)
I would say the same about Return of the Jedi. Empire was much better, Jedi was a bit of a down turn in the franchise. Look at X-men, Spider-man, and the original batman and superman franchises. The third movie is defiantly a weak point in all of them. Let’s not The Godfather Part III, Halloween III, Alien III.
I have never been sure why the momentum falters on the second sequel. Films like Return of the King shows us that it is possible to make a stellar third film. But for every Last Crusade we seem to get dozens and dozens of Jaws 3-D, and Matrix Revolutions.
Then again, I guess like everything else it depends on the individual. Maybe there are plenty of people out there who prefer “Season of the Witch” to the first two Halloween films, what do I know.
Maybe there is something to this because I’ve been waiting for Matrix Revolutions to show up on TV to see it (refusing to rent on principle) and I’m still waiting…it must have really sucked. How come no one mentioned Back to the Future 3 🙂 One good third movie in a trilogy (other than Return of the King AND Jedi) was the Chronicals of Riddick, and don’t tell me it wasn’t the third movie in a trilogy, Vin Diesel said it was.
I know I can’t review movies because sometimes I’m way off from the pulse of the viewing public and even among my fellow sci-fi fans BUT Matrix 3 was my favorite and the movie that made me a fan of the other two. Return of the King was also sublime but it’s not as much as sequel in that the story already existed. Nolan is in that stage writers get in when the have some characters to work with but wondering if there’s really a story worth telling. If they’re going for that realism from the other two I’m still having a hard time imagining which villian would work.
i’d like to see a third installment.if theyre able to make a sequel like dark knight, which i feel was better than the first ,surely given enough time they can make another decent movie.after all, i was very pleased with the bourne trilogy
