“Sleep Dealer”

September 23, 2008 By Sam Sloan 1 Comment

“Sometimes you control the machine…sometimes the machine controls you”

“Sleep Dealer” is a new spanish-speaking film from a rising star in the director’s chair, Alex Rivera. This latest venue of his is set in a near-future, militarized world marked by closed borders, virtual labor and a global digital network that joins minds and experiences via implants that allow users to tap directly into their nervous system.

The United States has built a wall separating itself from the infusion of Mexican immigrants flooding into its country illegally, however, it continues to allow business’ to outsource through “node workers” who plug in and virutally maneuver robots remotely.

A private company has hijacked control of a small Mexican village’s water supply, selling it back to them at a higher price. Memo Cruz, played by Luis Fernando Peña, is a young man living in this isolated non-tech village, with dreams of working in high-tech factories up north. After he creates a transmitter that allows him to tap into signals from around the world his life is forever altered when his transmissions are intercepted by those he shouldn’t be listening in on.

“Sleep Dealer” was seen in January 2008 at the Sundance Film Festival and is rumored to hit theaters across the globe beginning February 2009. Catch the trailer at Slash Film and stay tuned to Slice of SciFi for updates.
