Longoria front runner for “Avengers” role?

September 15, 2008 By Mike Hickerson 7 Comments

“Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria was seen at Marvel Studios over the weekend, leaving with a handfull of “Avengers” comic books, according to various reports.

Speculation is that Longoria is the front runner for the role of the Wasp in the upcoming “Avengers” movie, set to open in the summer of 2010.

There has been no confirmation of this story by any official sources, but as expected the Internet is buzzing with the possibilty of Longaria stepping into the role.

Introduced into Marvel Comics in “Tales To Astonish” issue 44, the Wasp’s alter ego is Janet van Dyne.  The Wasp is one of the orignal members of the Avengers who subjected her to a biochemical procedure which granted her the ability to, upon shrinking, grow wings and fire blasts of energy, which she called her “wasp’s sting.”  In the comic books, she dated and married Henry “Hank” Pym, who is also known as Ant-Man.  Ant-Man is one of several Marvel Comics characters slated to get a movie in the next several years.

No word yet on if Longoria would feature in the Ant-Man movie.

For now, all of this is just rumor and speculation.  We’ll let you know any specific details as soon as we get confirmation.

Having not seen her in anything, I’m in no position to judge, but I already hear the cries of angry fanboys who don’t want anything even remotely conencted to Desperate Housewives touching the Avengers movie.

She’s a actress, sheesh. George Clooney started his acting career in a movie about killer tomatoes for god’s sake.

she’s supposed to portray a self-centered/shallow character who is about as useful to the team as Aquaman is to the Justice League… she’s perfect!

Do you ever wonder why the sea is so salty? It is from all the tears Aquaman cries when he reads comments like that.
I blame the writers myself with not having the imagination to make the most of Aquaman’s and Wasp’s abilities.

I am embarassed by you sci fi fans that refuse to keep up on pop culture. Eva Longoria is actually kind of a man’s actress. It would be different if they were casting Teri Hatcher or Marcia Cross, that would be a travesty. But I think Eva is an excellent choice for a comic book character.
