Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, 71, is recovering and his condition has been kept at serious for now but each minute he is becoming more stable after surgery to reconnect nerves and repair damage to his left arm and hand following a severe auto accident Sunday night.
According to Donna Lee, Mr. Freeman’s publicists, the beloved actor is in “good spirits,” “visiting with family members” and “walking…looking forward to his release as soon as possible.”
Freeman is likely to be in store for months of treatment and physical therapy.
Another passenger in the car, Demaris Meyer from Tennessee, is also listed as doing favorably and in good spirits. The autombile was owned by Meyer, but driven by Freeman.
The accident took place late Sunday night on a rural stretch of the Mississippi Delta Highway as Freeman was driving to his home. The jaws-of-life were needed to rescue Freeman and Meyer from the wreckage. Freeman was assessed on the scene by paramedics to have serious damage to his left arm, elbow and shoulder. He and Meyer, who were to driving to meet up with Freeman’s wife at their home in Tallahatchie County, were airlifted to an Acute Care Center in Memphis, Tennessee.
It now appears that Freeman may have momentarily nodded off at the wheel, causing the automobile to turn off the road, go airborne and crash headlong into a ditch.
An eyewitness said that he was “watching television about 11:15 and I heard a car sliding on the highway out in front of our house. As I looked out the window, I saw it began to flip after it hit our next-door neighbor’s drive. It went end-over-end about twice and then it came back on its wheels in the ditch. It was a mess,” he said.
