When “The Dark Knight” opened in theaters last weekend it shattered all previous records for an opening film by garnering over $158 million in ticket sales for a 3-day period. Now it holds another record that it will likely keep for quite some time — making over $314 million in just 7-days. For 2008, it is still behind “Iron Man” ($315 million) but will likely surpass that film over the next week.
“The Dark Knight,” starring Christian Bale as the caped crusader, the late Heath Ledger and his Oscar-worthy performance as The Joker, Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart at Harvey Dent/Two Face, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and Maggie Gyllanhall kept its number one spot across North America and now ranks among the top 25 grossing films of all time, and it’s only been out one full week. The current top-seated film remains James Cameron’s “Titanic” at over $600 million.
“X-Files: I Want To Believe,” came in a disappointing 4th being beaten out by last weekend’s number 2 film “Mamma Mia” which placed 3rd and the Will Farrell/John C. Reilly flick, “Step Brothers” coming in 2nd. The top 5 rounded out with Brendan Fraser’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth.”
We will have the Final Top 10 Weekend films with all their stats this Tuesday on Slice of SciFi.
