Slice of SciFi News Briefs

July 17, 2008 By S. K. Sloan 2 Comments

John Woo will direct comicbook adaptation “Caliber,” to be unveiled at next week’s Comic-Con in San Diego. Story takes place with King Arthur and his knights as 19th century gunslingers in the Pacific Northwest. Production not likely to begin until Woo completes “Red Cliffs – Part II.”

Hollywood producers and the Screen Actors Guild failed to reach a contract agreement Wednesday after meeting privately for two hours. The sides have no further meetings planned.

Will Ferrell ready to tackle another drama after the success of the 2006 feature “Stranger Than Fiction.” He is looking at a script titled “Two Face,” the story of a racist, who, after a prank gone awry, develops a split personality.

Broadway’s long-running production of “The Phantom of the Opera” will go dark for four performances in August to accommodate the installation of a new digital sound system at a cost of $750,000 (USD).

Cable is expected, for the first time in television history, to outshine traditional broadcast networks when the Emmy nominations are announced on Thursday. Major nods are expected to go to shows such as “Dexter,” ‘The Tudors,” “Mad Men,” the Glenn Close drama “Damages,” “The Wire,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and several more. Network nominations will likely go to ABC’s two SF hits shows “Lost” and “Pushing Daises.” Other likely candidates are NBC’s “30 Rock,” “The Office” and Fox’s “The Family Guy.” If that show gets a nomination it will be the first primetime animated show to do so since 1961’s “The Flintstones.”

ABC will host the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards live on September 21, 2008.

Finally, Katie Holmes (“Batman Begins”) will return to the small screen this fall for a guest shot on the ABC hit fantasy show “Eli Stone.” Holmes had her big acting break several years ago on “Dawson’s Creek.” Her episode will air on October 21, 2008.

Wait, Family Guy will be the first prime time animated show to get nominated for an Emmy since the Flintstones? Does that mean in all it’s years the Simpsons was never nominated?

Well, I suppose they have gotten enough awards over the years, but still, an Emmy nod would be nice.

The Simpsons have been nominated and even won several Emmy Awards over its long history on television, however, not in the one-hour category that The Family Guy is in. If won it will be the first for an hour long animated series since The Flintstones 47 years ago.

Going up against The Family Guy is Imaginationland (South Park) and Justice League: The New Frontier.
