When will Spidey 4 hit theaters?

May 27, 2008 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Last week, we reported on the possibility that Spider-Man 4 and 5 could be made back-to-back.  Script-writer James Vanderbilt’s screenplay for the next installment follows a story arc that would take two movies to tell, according to reports.

And while this news may excite Spidey fans, it does leave fans wondering just how and when the next time our favorite web-slinging hero might be back in a theater near you.

Right now, it’s all up to Sony Pictures.  The studio re-upped on their rights to make a fourth Spider-Man movie last week reports IESB.  And it’s up to Sony to decide a time-table for production and release of a new Spider-Man film.

“As far as Spider-man 4, it’s really up to Sony, it’s up to them, most likely scenario is 2010 or 2011 but we can’t speak for them and I think, that we don’t know,” said Marvel Vice Chairman Peter Cuneo, “They have given us their re-up payment for that film so you know they’re going to make it within a reasonable timeframe. Sony may be looking at some issues with the cast and so on, I think they have to make some decisions.”

Of course, some of the biggest decision to bring Spidey back involve the participants from the first three films from both sides of the camera.  There is no word yet on if Toby McGuire is interested in reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man for a fourth installment or how much Sony would have to pay to get him back in the leading role.  Also in question is who would be in the director’s chair.  Sam Raimi helmed the first three films but is not under contract for a fourth.  For a while, it appeared Raimi might have been otherwise booked with The Hobbit and its sequel, but director Guillermo del Toro will be in the director’s chair for those films, leaving Raimi potentially available.  And the biggest question may be–which of the two can the franchise least afford to be without–McGuire or Raimi?

Another consideration for Sony may be Marvel Studios plans for products, leading up to an Avengers movie in 2011.

One big question could be–would having a fourth Spider-Man feature opening at the same time as the latest Iron Man, a Thor movie, Captain America and the Avengers movie be too much of a good thing for Marvel-related comics?

Looks like we’ll have to wait and see.

Actually, I hope Spidey 4 drops Raimi and McGuire. I think they did a fine job mostly in the previous films, but I think after three movies, there needs to be a fresh approach. Bruce Campbell needs to make a guest apperance because every movie should have Bruce Campbell in it. LOL

I really think that they will struggle at the box office if they replace Toby McGuire.

You are right about Tobey because I don’t think anyone else could play the part as good as him. The return of Venom is a definite because if anyone remembers (which most people don’t) some of the symbiote in Connors lab is still there and it could be used for the making of carnage possibly.

I call for a REBOOT! Not because I care, but because everyone is doing it these days.
