Original Flash zips back to comics

Original Flash zips back to comics

April 30, 2008 By Mike Hickerson 4 Comments

Twenty three years after he died saving the universe, the original Flash is returning to DC reports the New York Daily News.

The Flash will return in the final panel of today’s “DC Universe #0,” and undo one of the few lasting deaths in all of comic book history. The original Flash, Barry Allen, died years ago when he disintegrated saving the universe.

“Barry’s had this heroic sacrifice, which is the coolest thing you can do for a superhero,” said comic historian Alan Kistler. “If you brought Barry back, the question is can you do anything to top it?”

“That’s the point of comics – they don’t have to die, because they’re fictional creations,” said Grant Morrison, one of the writers behind the comeback.

“We can do anything with them, and we can make them come back and make them defy death,” Morrison said. “And that’s why people read comics, to get away from the way life works, which is quite cruel and unheroic and ends in death.”

Morrison said that the newly-returned Flash wouldn’t take long to get up to speed with the current members of the Justice League.

“He’s the God of the modern world,” Morrison said. “People are doing more everyday, moving faster and I think the Flash can be their hero. I do think he’s a superhero for now.”

“DC Universe #0” hits comic-stores today.

I actually prefer Wally to Barry. Wally is the more interesting character, he has been but through more. We’ve seen him grow as a character from Kid Flash to a mature father and icon for the rest of the heroes. I just don’t see a reason to bring Barry back, unless it is just to get the silver age JLA together again, Supes, Wonder Woman, Hal Jordan, Ollie, Barry, etc.

I just don’t get, Barry had a full and complete story. He brought about the silver age and saved comics, had mny adventures and made the ultimate sacrifice. I mean really yeah you can say that comics are a way to escape reality, but I for one believe comics are more of a way to enjoy a great story. Many of DC’s comics have a theme the Batman family is a detective/crimebuster series, Green Lantern is more or less a super police force, and the flash series has been a legacy series about the speedsters and really bring back Barry does in fact ruin what the Flash is about. Also Barry debuted way back in my parents day, there is no one I really know that can really relate to the charater or at least anyone not from that generation. I guess what I really want to say is that Barry Allen is a DC Icon for a reason he had a great run but one of the biggest things that made his run great was in fact how it ended and now by bringing him back into a universe and a time where he has little place to fit in. I mean everyone is entitled to there own opinion and this will probley boost sales for a bit but still think this a cheap move and will only make things worse.
