Hick’s Picks 24

April 10, 2008 By Michael Hickerson 1 Comment

Universal Options Earth Vs the Moon

Universal Pictures has picked up the pitch for a new “sci-fi epic” Earth vs the Moon according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The pitch was made by writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. Earth vs the Moon will be produced by Scott Stuber, who is currently producing the new Wolf Man movie for Universal.

Pinker Named Show Runner for Fox’s Fringe

Lost‘s Jeff Pinker has been tapped to produce Fox’s high-profile sci-fi drama Fringe reports the Hollywood Reporter. Fringe is the latest project from J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

On Fringe, Pinkner will serve as executive producer/show runner. The project centers on an FBI agent (Anna Torv), who teams with a guy (Joshua Jackson) and his scientist father (John Noble) to confront the spread of unexplained phenomena.

Pinker served as a producer for Abrams’ Alias.

Schalmme will direct, produce Captain Cook’s Extraordinary Atlas

Emmy winner Thomas Schlamme, who worked with Aaron Sorkin on the dramatic series The West Wing and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, has been named executive-producer for ABC’s fantasy series, Captain Cook’s Extraordinary Atlas. In addition, Schlamme will take the director’s seat for the pilot episode.

Atlas centers on a young girl who finds a magical atlas that reveals a secret world. Schlamme will executive-produce the pilot with series creator Tom Wheeler.

Audiences will see half of Vin Diesel’s Babylon A.D.

Actor Vin Diesel’s fans will only see half of his latest science-fiction movie, Babylon A.D. when it hits theaters later this year reports Cinematical. 20th Century Fox has edited the film from a running time of 160 minutes down to 90 according to reports. Initial reports said there would be two versions of the film–the longer version for U.S. audiences and the 90 minute version for international markets. However, now it looks as if the film will see a world-wide distribution at the shorter running time.

In Babylon A.D. Diesel plays a mercenary tasked with escorting a woman infected with a virus that could wipe out humanity from Russia to New York. The cast for the film includes Michelle Yeoh and Mélanie Thierry as the infected woman.

The film was originally aiming for a darker tone and feel, but reports have 20th Century Fox editing the film toward a PG-13 rating. Babylon A.D. is set to open in August.

Sounds like the smart money is on waiting for Babylon A.D. to come out on disk in a “Director’s Cut” or other special edition.
