After his dismal box office showing in the darkly graphic chiller “The Number 23,” the continued cancelation and delay of other films he was to be involved with; Jim Carrey was beginning to look like a blast from the past. Now, however, the star of such blockbuster films like “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” his dead on Andy Kaufman in “Man on the Moon,” “The Truman Show,” “Dumb and Dumber,” and the first “Ace Ventura, Pet Detective,” the man with the rubber face is back on top of his game with this week’s film entry “Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who.”
The film is on the fast-track to becoming a blockbuster for the famed actor. It is being projected that if moviegoers continue flooding theaters before days end today, the film will most likely register in excess of $45 million for just a three-day showing, making “Who” the biggest weekend opener so far in 2008.
Let’s face it. Carrey is a fine dramatic actor. But, he really shines in venues like this that allow him to just run free and let loose those comic dogs of war. Carrey is exquisite in this film and once again proves that given the right material, he can make a film shine.
Coming in at a very distant second this weekend will be the Roland Emmerich pre-historic romp titled “10,000 B.C.” with “Never Back Down,” “College Road Trip” and “Vantage Point” rounding out the top five.
Stay tuned to Slice of SciFi as we will present the final top ten films for the weekend in a few days.
