New Amsterdam Wins Timeslot — Jericho Does…OK

March 6, 2008 By Sam Sloan 8 Comments

amsterdam.jpgjerichostandoff.jpgThe debut episode of the Fox drama “New Amsterdam” won the 9PM timeslot on Tuesday with a solid premiere rating aided by a typically massive “American Idol” lead-in, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“New Amsterdam,” is the new weekly SF show that follows the life of an immortal named Amsterdam (the original name for the city of New York). Amsterdam is a New York detective that is stuck in that city to never die or age until he has found his true soul mate.

It took forever for Fox to finally get around to debuting this skein, however, Tuesday night’s debut was the second-highest-rated show of the night only after “Idol,” which just also happens to be on Fox and serves as Amsterdam’s lead-in show. The immortal was able to rack up a 4.6/11 share which equates to almost 14 million viewers.

The other Tuesday night SF show had much lower numbers by comparison but still showed fair ratings for the LIVE watching crowd. “Jericho” garnered a 1.8/5 share for its efforts, or close to 6 million fans tuning in. While that is nothing to hoop and holler about, this is one particular show that has shown it does much better with the TiVo/DVR crowd and it will be interesting to see what those numbers reveal. After the gripping, and quite shocking conclusion to this Tuesday’s episode, “Jericho” has proven it deserves a third season. We can only hope that CBS is sharp enough to realize that.

I so agree with you! After JERICHO’S OVERSIGHT episode, WE MUST HAVE A THIRD SEASON!!!
I, too, hope that CBS is smart enough to know that.
    Thanks for your support.

I have quickly become a fan of Jericho. One of the biggest things about the show is how thought provoking it is. I wrote up a blog on the constitutional implications are handled by the storyline.

New Amsterdam wasn’t half bad. I recorded it thinking it would be a waste of time and I was pleasantly surprised.

Producers better ready that “we’re not getting renewed” ending. Jericho will not see a third season…

I watched the pilot of New Amsterdam on Tuesday night and enjoyed it. However, it did not create as much excitement for me as the “Highlander” or “The Man From Earth” movies did. It was nice to see a Sci-Fi show on someone who obtains immortality from some means than a vampires bite.

Now a show on a real life immortal would be even more exciting.

I liked the second episode more than the first; and I am looking forward to seeing the third episode.

The main character was much less annoying in episode 2. Hopefully episode 3 will keep up the momentum.
