“American Gods” is the 2001 novel by Neil Gaiman and the great news is that it will be available for the next month entirely FREE from the Harper Collins Website. You can also learn more from Neil’s blog.
First published June 19, 2001, “American Gods” was, and still is, one of the most talked-about books of the new millennium. It is a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth and across an American landscape at once eerily familiar and utterly alien. It has become a contemporary masterpiece.
Synopsis:
Released from prison, Shadow finds his world turned upside down. His wife Laura, has been killed in an automobile accident; a mysterious stranger named Mr. Wednesday offers him a job as his bodyguard. But this new boss seems to know more about Shadow than should be possible and warns the ex-con that a storm is coming — a battle for the very soul of America . . . and they are in its direct path.
As they travel across America visiting Wednesday’s colleagues and acquaintances, Shadow comes to the realization that Mr. Wednesday is the actual incarnation of the mythical Odin the All-Father.
Wednesday is on a mission to recruit American manifestations of the Old Gods of ancient legends, whose powers have waned as their believers have decreased in number, to participate in an epic battle against the New American Gods, these new manifestations of the old forces disguised in modern life and technology through portals such as the internet, new media, & modern means of transport.
