The Hollywood outfit that loves to list the best in American cinema plans to pick the top 10 movies in 10 genres, including science fiction, animation, mysteries and Westerns.
Will “Star Wars” make any of the AFI’s top-10 lists?
The American Film Institute announced Thursday that its annual top-100 list will be broken into the series of 10-best rankings. The other genres are fantasy, gangster tales, sports flicks, romantic comedies, courtroom dramas and epic films.
The institute began its yearly lists 10 years ago with a top-100 rundown of best American movies, which placed “Citizen Kane” at No. 1. Since then, the group has done lists on such movie matters as best film quotes, thrillers, love stories, comedies and stars.
The results of this year’s top-10 lists will be revealed on a CBS special in June. The top-10 lists will be decided from a field of 50 films in each genre in ballots sent to about 1,500 filmmakers, actors, critics and others in Hollywood.
Among the nominated films are “Pinocchio” and “Shrek” for animation; “The Matrix” and the 1953 version of “The War of the Worlds” for science fiction; “The Searchers” and “Unforgiven” for Westerns; and “Ben-Hur” and “Braveheart” for epics.
