Berg On Dune

December 26, 2007 By Sam Sloan 3 Comments

berg.jpgWe talked about this possibility earlier and now MTV.com has confirmed that actor turned director Peter Berg (“The Kingdom”) will direct another version of Frank Herbert’s classic sci-fi novel “Dune.”

The book already has come to the big screen once before in the 1984 adaptation and on the small screen in the 2000 SCI FI Channel miniseries.

Berg stated that the only thing holding up full scale production on the project is the current writer’s strike, which he supports. The film has no script in hand, but MTV.com reports that the film’s producers already know which writers they want to tackle the monumental task of adapting Herbert’s novel for the big screen.

[‘Dune’ is] “a done deal,” stated Berg. “If it weren’t for the writers’ strike, we’d be in it right now.”

Berg will has also directed the new Will Smith SF feature “Hancock,” due out in July 2008.

There is so much good fiction out there to put on the big screen why do something that has already been done twice? I was quite satisified with the mini-series, no need to do this one. how about do:

The Nalupeiron Sequence – by John Meaney or
    Anything by Alistair Reynolds or
Anything by John Varley – (Millenium doesn’t count)

just to name a few! I wish I had the resources some of those trek fan filmers have – Buddha bless them – why yes work is slow today.

On the other hand, a number of fans have been dissatisfied with the adaptations to date and would welcome another take on the classic.

I’m with Skiznot. If you absolutely have to do a remake, why not take a movie that had potential but fell apart; maybe the actors were bad, or the director was lame, or the script was changed into obliviion by studio heads, and remake that?
