Of special note is the fact that while “The Golden Compass” was a box office disaster in the United States, over in Europe it is a huge hit with moviegoing audiences. In its opening bow in the EU it more than doubled its box office over that of the same period in America, bringing in over $55 million. The same holds true for the Robert Zemeckis film “Beowulf.” That movie also didn’t fare so well in the States but has been a hit throughout the rest of the world.
