“Torchwood” Gears One Family-Friendly Episode

December 8, 2007 By Sam Sloan 10 Comments

300torchwood_cast.jpgIn an effort to capture a wider audience, yet without alienating his staunch adult fanbase, “Torchwood” creator Russell T. Davies will provide a specially edited episode for the show’s second season. This edited version will be suitable for all family members, including the kiddies.

“Torchwood,” was a series created out of the more family friendly “Doctor Who” series but was designed for a strictly adult audience, taking on topics as diverse as alternate sexual relationships, extra-marital promiscuity, inter-species copulation, violence, alien abuse and more with scripts that were extremely well written and acted.

In an interview Davies said the decision to do this was about the young fans.

“We were aware that an awful lot of our audience love Captain Jack, but wouldn’t able to see it,” he said. “So the answer was – let’s make a version for a younger audience.”

The family-friendly edited version will be shown a few days after the adult version.

Both versions of Torchwood will be shown on BBC2 starting in mid January 2008. Season Two will also be coming to BBC America and on the cable HD Tier shortly after it’s aired in the U.K.

“Torchwood” stars John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness, the leader of a group that investigates alien intrusions in Cardiff, England. Barrowman’s co-stars include Eve Myles, Burn Gorman, Naoko Mori and Gareth David-Lloyd. Joining the group of investigators for part of Season Two will be former “Doctor Who” companion Freema Agyeman.

    Weak.

What time does this show air? Is it 10pm? Is the edited version gonna air at an earlier time? Would have to be a standalone episode or the kids are gonna be confused.

why is it weak? I think this is cool myself. be able to get like my cousins that can’t watch the other one to watch this now. and it says it will be on a few days later than the original one. so whats to be confused about? we kids watch sci fi too, and we matter. and we buy the toys and stuff. so it be better if they kinda show that they know we watch this stuff too.

I flat-out don’t like Torchwood; it’s better than Flash, but worse than Painkiller Jane, and I’m most glad I stopped wasting BTARDIS fuel on it.

It started out fine but seems to have delined to shoot your boss because you have no controll over your co workers to gay kissing to putting your co workers down…
I was hoping for a good scifi, not a “what goes on at the corp. level”
We forgive you too Capt Jack…..

Weak because this is an adult show. As for marketable, I don’t think they had marketability in mind when they created the character of Capt. Jack. He’s a bisexual (more like omnisexual) man from the future trapped in the past that can’t die. A couple of the characters from Torchwood are bisexual as a matter of fact.

Kids have lots to watch, a show meant for adults and later edited for kids is a bad idea to begin with. Hope this is a one-shot idea. Maybe the episode will tie-in with an episode of Doctor Who. We’ll see I guess.

From the very few comments I’ve read about Torchwood, the only people that don’t like this show are the real hardcore Doctor Who nerds or people that don’t like sci-fi or gay characters in general. Case in point: no idea what BTARDIS fuel is and why you would waste any of it in the first place…

actually, i should point out that the good doctor started out as a “educational” childrens show. So seeing torchwood spiining itself of into one, i dont see where the problem is. and i disagree, kids do not have a lot of shows already. what are you talking about? spongebob? american idol? please. you don’t know my kid. she wont sit still for that kind of crap.
kids shows are lacking in any content, sci fi especially. I only see this as a good thing. and look at it this way, it keeps these actors in a paycheck year round, not to mention the writers. the more the write, the better the content for the “adults”.
Come on guys, sci fi is not adults only, if it was none of us would have grown up on it. why should we deprive our kids of the experience?

    Holy crap.
You know what? There are going to be some things that kids can’t see. Why does everything have to be geared to “families” and “kids”?
Some things are not for kids.
    Torchwood was intended for ADULTS.
There’s content on the show that’s NOT FOR KIDS.
That’s why it’s on LATE when kids should be in bed, if not sleep, then on their way to SleepyLand.
If little kids love Captain Jack on Doctor Who, then let him be on Doctor Who every once in a while.
The rest of the time, he’s on Torchwood, and Torchwood is a “Grown Folks Show”.
    Leave it alone.
    Damn.

EddieLa, coming at you as someone who watches Doctor Who every so often and quite enjoys it, who watches most sci-fi obsessively, and quite enjoyed the finale of Hidden Fronter (and looking forward to “Blood and Fire”): Torchwood sucks. For all the aforementioned reasons.

I might watch an edited version of a series two episode, because (1) the show totally fails at adultness or grittiness, so the kid’s version might be an improvement by cutting the irritating parts, (2) because it’s a nice idea, and (3) because it’s shorter, and, after patiently watching the entire first series, Torchwood is never getting another forty minutes from me.
