Only yesterday we reported how the talks between striking Broadway stagehands and producers and theaters was going so well. When the parties involved decided to take a 12-hr break in negotiations to rest up, both sides came out of the meeting all smiles and with nothing but positive remarks about the forward progress being made. We even reported that things were so optimistic that the musical “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” would resume.
Oh what a difference a day can make.
Those forward moving talks came to a screeching halt this morning as communication between all sides bagan to unravel and finally broke down. The Broadway strike is now entering its 17th day.
“We got to point in the negotiations where the two sides could not come to an agreement. There is no deal and there is no date or time to reconvene,” Bruce Cohen, a spokesperson for Local One of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees stated in an interview.
This will keep the lights out and ticket booths closed for upward of 26 Broadway plays and musicals, leaving only 8 in production because those stagehands have a separate contract.
