“Beowulf” Takes First Prize

November 19, 2007 By Sam Sloan 2 Comments

angelinajoliebeowulf.jpg“Beowulf” finally hit the big screen this weekend after all the pre-release hype and did well but not as good as was expected for a film that director Robert Zemeckis broke new cinematic ground with.

Using 3-D technology, stop motion capture and the latest in CGI animation creations, “Beowulf,” the ancient tale of a man, because of his greed, almost brings his kingdom to its knees after killing a horrific, mystical beast.

“Beowulf” captured around $28.1 million for its opening weekend, a good showing, but not the $40 million that was projected, especially since the film opened in standard theaters, movie houses converted for full 3-D technology and 3-D IMAX houses.

Rounding out the top five were Jerry Seinfeld’s CGI hit the “Bee Movie,” “American Gangster,” and “Fred Claus,” all returning after being in the top tier last weekend. New to the list is the Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman feature fantasy outing “Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium” in fifth place with only $10 million to show for its Stateside premiere.

We will have the full Top Ten for you later this week.

Maybe it would have done better if they had promoted it a little better. This one seemed to fly under the radar until quite recently.
