It looks like there will be a Nichols on the set of the new Star Trek feature film, but it won’t be the legendary Nichelle Nichols who starred as the iconic Commander Uhura for the first 40 years of the franchise’s history.
Actress Rachel Nichols recently told the Toronto Sun that she has been cast for a part in the J.J. Abrams film. Nichols has a past working relationship with Abrams. She appeared on the last season of Jennifer Garner’s “Alias.”
Currently she doesn’t even know the name of her character and, as is the case with all past Trek scripts, isn’t allowed contractually to spill any of the plot’s secrets.
“I’m very restricted on what I’m allowed to say,” stated Nichols in the interview. “But yes, there’s a good chance you’ll see my shining face in the new Star Trek … My mom even e-mailed me about it because she saw it (online) and I hadn’t told her yet. There’s a lot of buzz about it, but honestly, I don’t even know the name of my character.”
Nichols is starring in the horror film “P2” due in theaters this Friday, November 9 and on Christmas Day 2007 in the new Mike Nichols film “Charlie Wilson’s War” opposite Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
