“When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth”

November 5, 2007 By Sam Sloan Leave a Comment

890524631_684ec35a3a.jpgIDW Publishing releases its adaptation of the Locus Award Winning science fiction story “When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth.” This tale of computer geeks who keep the internet running through the apocalypse was illustrated by indie comic artist Daniel Warner.

“I saw this project as an opportunity to contribute to a visual vocabulary that is evolving the relationship between Comic Books and Science Fiction,” said Warner. “There is a long tradition of sci-fi in comics form, but conceptually we have fallen way behind. Conversely, sci-fi literature is way behind when it comes to design. The book covers and magazine illustration of most current science fiction tend to look like 50’s nostalgia.”

“When Sysadmins Ruled the Earth” is the second in IDW’s Cory Doctorow’s “Futuristic Tales of the Here and Now” series. Warner was pleased to be a part of what he called a “renewal of vows” between the science fiction genre and the comic book format.

“Authors like Charles Stross, Robert J. Sawyer and and Cory Doctorow are flinging down new concepts that haven’t been touched in comics or anywhere else in pop culture,” said Warner. “Comics are perfect for exploring this emerging brand of science fiction, just like Noir Fiction was perfect for exploring Cyberpunk in the 80’s.”

Doctorow’s story was adapted for comics by Harvey Award-nominated writer J.C. Vaughn, editor of Dynamite Entertainment’s Battlestar Galactica series. He recently completed a comic book adaptation of the Fox series 24.
