“Journeyman” Picks Up

October 22, 2007 By Sam Sloan 9 Comments

journeyman.JPGKevin McKidd’s intense SF thriller “Journeyman” is slowly catching on and beginning to get a loyal following, making fans of the show hopeful that it will squeak by the show-cutting execs at NBC.

The show is about a newspaper reporter (McKidd) with a past that includes a love lost in an airplane crash, a gambling addiction, and a marriage to his cop brother’s ex. McKidd’s character, named Dan Vassar, has the fortunate, or dubious, depending on your perspective, ability to travel back in time. Problem is he has no control over when he disappears from the present or where he will end up. The only clue Dan gets is seconds before jumping time, he gets a terrific headache. The premise may lead some to think “Quantum Leap,” however, “Journeyman,” except for the time-traveling element, is geniuinely all its own.

The show is riveting, ambitious, very well written, with leadership from McKidd that drives the show in directions not expected from the genre.

This program could have gone the way of other formulaic time-travel fare, but takes a unique stand on its own with excellent writing, and a top-notch supporting cast that includes Reed Diamond (“Homicide: Life On the Streets” & “The Shield”), Gretchen Egolf, Moon Bloodgood stars as Dan’s ex, who turns out to be something other than just a dead lover and Brian Howe (“Evan Almighty”).

On tonight’s show, the worst possible scenario for a father occurs. Dan finds himself alone with Zack on a father/son outing when he feels a strong headache coming on.

“Journeyman” airs everyone Monday at 10/9C on NBC.

Losing interest in “Heroes,” haven’t seen and not interested in seeing, “Chuck,” and gave up on “Bionic Woman.”

“Journeyman” is the only new show on NBC I like. Looking forward to tonight’s episode.

It’s been a *totally* unintersting Fall season so far. None of the new shows have impressed me, but with a writers’ strike possibly just around the corner, and the actors and directors likely to strike next year, I’ll be surprised if anything gets cancelled before the networks have gotten every penny they invested out of every show on their schedules.

You know, this is a great show. I didn’t have much hope for this season, but Journeyman is one I think we’re going to be talking about for years to come. Keep talking it up, guys, so that NBC doesn’t pull a “Dresden” on us!

This may be a different premise for television but this story is an almost exactly the same as a fabulous book that came at a few years back called The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. It has also been made into a movie with Rachel McAdams and Eric Bana that is supposed to be out in 2008. I honestly have not watched the series because I enjoyed the book so much and I just was not interested in another version of that story. I can’t say for myself if it is any good or not but I highly recommend the book. It will stay with you for a long time after you finish it.

I’ve heard rumors that another critically praised show is being considered for this timeslot…

It may not be good news for Journeyman on that front.

This show is fantastic. I honestly pray that they don’t cancel it…for NBC’s sake. It has the potential of beating CSI.

I can’t believe they have cancelled this show! If you send Rice A Roni to the NBC office, it could be a return like Jericho. I read that just yesterday. If you are a Journeyman fan like I am, then I HIGHLY recommend it.
    I am going to~
