“Cavemen” Slipping

October 11, 2007 By Sam Sloan 20 Comments

cavemenhottub_4.jpgIf the ratings decline continues in the direction it is currently going the new ABC SF sitcom “Cavemen” could go the way of the…..well, cavemen.

The show about cavemen living and adapting in a 21st Century world, and which was based on characters created for the highly successful Geico Insurance commericals, took a 26% nose-dive in ratings between its opening pilot and week two. A total of only 6.96 million viewers in that all important 18-49 male demographic tuned in for the second week of the show, according to Nielsen. This places it as the second overall biggest loser among all the new shows. NBC’s “Bionic Woman” holds first with a 28% drop in viewership.

The show also didn’t fare much better in the DVR category that Nielsen now monitors. The show ranked third in recorded programs for Tuesday night. The other show that may have to face its own title is “Reaper.” It too shows a steady decline and will probably be facing its namesake’s grim visitation soon, according to Variety.

Of course, the King of Tuesday night programming remains that irascible limping doctor “House” on Fox. The show about the drug-taking doctor woefully lacking in people skills continues to plow under any competitor placed against it.

There’s just way to much to watch on TV and NO ONE should be watching it all so I can understand the slip in ratings on the 2nd week of all the new shows (people are not picking and choosing whats worth watching with their allotted time)

On a complete tangent: Medical shows drive me nuts in general, they’ve gotta be the most unrealistic thing on TV second only to reality shows! People need to realize Doctors are NOT that hands on nor do they go through that much investigative work unless those people have some really great insurance!

I didn’t watch it due to other commitments on Tuesday nights, but really.

What were they thinking? They were bad commercials to start with!

Cavemen is one of the freshest new shows I have seen. So many people aren’t even giving it a chance (I almost didn’t) since it is based on commercials, but it is the best new show I have seen in a long time. I would say it is like “The Office” meets “Arrested Development” meets the cavemen Geico commercials. Please, everyone, give the show a chance!

Cavemen was a horrible show, their was no plot… it was like…

Whoever wrote the scripts for cavemen was seriously an idiot.

It’s like the whole point of the show was… Cavemen in the future. It goes no farther than that…

Haha a caveman is using an apple ipod… omg lol omg lol.. omg…

I have watched all the episodes and I think that Cavemen is hilarious. It is a very smart comedy set in this millennium. And so many sitcoms lack real plots. Why is everyone against cavemen, just cause it came from a commercial. Really guys give it a chance.

it would be funnier if they did more “Caveman” things. I like the whole neurotic thing – these guys make it work pretty well. However I think it would be more interesting if they exercises more of their own “culture” in the series. There’s nothing more boring then watching them completely fit in. It’s like watching a comedy about African Americans acting entirely like white suburbians. It could be funnier if they acted more like cavemen would….

laughed and then laughed again…..i’m 40 year old professional woman , and i completely get the dry humor. In fact, i am grateful for it. Come on people, its comedy, not doctors having sex in linen closets or surgeons puttin people back together in an hour and its not cops catching baby rapists.

It’s comedy people, were supposed to laugh. Try it sometime, your blood pressure will thank you for it.

sounds like a lot of a priori prejudice to me. either that or the witty repartee flies over the heads of majority tv couch potatoes. hmm…dare i guess that those who pass on this show prefer something along the lines of ‘the bachelor’ or some other mindnumbing socially reprehensible garbage?

The first episode of “Cavemen” had promise, but wasn’t perfect. The second episode was better, living up to some of that promise. The third episode was hilarious. The next week, the show was pre-empted. I’m VERY happy to see “Tony from ABC” ‘confirm’ that the show has not been cancelled.

I’m looking forward to the “Shaver” episode that the television guide channels mention.

Very smart comedy, would be good if they were wearing caveman costumes or not. The writing is brilliant and it’s racy, Much of what they say and do is taboo and would not be acceptable if they weren’t talking about cavemen.

For the record, I think making a TV show about a character from a commercial is the dumbest thing i ever heard of, I hated the idea of the show before i ever saw it and don’t know why i gave it a shot, but i got caught watching the first episode and have been hooked ever since.

“It’s like watching a comedy about African Americans acting entirely like white suburbians.”

Well, you pretty much summed it up right there, Desjardins. Of course if the show were actually about black people, that would be RACIST.

That said, I really like(d) the show–and I think the sitcom format is pretty much dead.

I am in Tennessee and we don’t get it here because of Dancing with the Stars and they do run it on Wednesday morning at 1am, so I watch it on my computer when I can – I totally enjoy the show and look at it as only comedy and nothing more. Just like my favorite Martin, or my mother the car or any of these other old time theme TV shows. It’s comedy people, I think all three characters are cool and funny along with their every so often Gieco Guy who shows up and mocks the people about women trying Caveman and getting hooked. lol – it’s comedy people – just kick back and enjoy the show. I didn’t like the office either when I first started watching it but gave it a few weeks and became hooked. I know if you open your mind and relax and just let it make you laugh you will get hooked also. Don’t cancel this show. It’s so much better then the Bachlor or Big Brother. I have to also say that I enjoy the follow up show Carpoolers. Keep up the good work ABC and don’t listen to these idiot Critics

Only the Cavmen and 2 1/2 men have me rolling on the floor. And not much makes me laugh. The Cavemen is perhaps too intelligently written for the anti cavemen to grasp the humor. I thought I’d have to call 911 when the cavewoman episode aired. And the shaver was superb!

I like the show Cavemen; it’s really funny… I only got a chance to watch the last few episodes; so they really need to re-run the first few. I don’t understand why every time I get into a new program it gets cancelled after a few episodes. All the shows I never watch continue on for several seasons. Perhaps my sense of humor is off, I don’t know.

Cavemen was cancelled because of low ratings. I don’t care about Cavemen. To be honest, I thought the Geico comercials with the Cavemen were pretty stupid. As far as I am concerned, Cavemen is history.
