William Shatner, most known for over 40 years as Captain James T. Kirk on the legendary Star Trek TV series and movies, and now for his two-time Emmy winning performance as Denny Crane on ABC’s “Boston Legal,” will be given a special honor from the Jules Verne Adventure Film Festival-2007. The event runs from December 5-16 this year.
The 76-year old Shatner will be presented the Jules Verne Lifetime Achievement Award in a special award ceremony at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, December 9. The host of the evening will be the man who killed Captain Kirk, ending his 40+ years with Starfleet, Malcolm McDowell, who played Dr. Soran in “Star Trek VII: Generations.” This film was used to allow the original Trek Captain to hand the movie bataan to The Next Generation cast and allowed for some great screen time between Kirk and Picard (Patrick Stewart).
The Jules Verne Lifetime Achievement Award is given as an honor to those dedicated artists whose achievements help to encourage the spirit of adventure, imagination and open-mindedness in the tradition of Jules Verne and those who have shared with generations a genuine and optimistic vision of human nature. William Shatner certainly embodies that spirit of adventure.
In the same ceremony, NASA will be honored for its 50th anniversary with a Jules Verne Exploration Award. Those presentations will be followed by a special screening of the final director’s cut of “Blade Runner,” with Ridley Scott and Harrison Ford in attendance.
Other dignitaries to be honored at other ceremonies include Marvel Comics legend Stan Lee, philanthropist Ted Turner, and filmmaker Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the late Jacques Cousteau. McDowell will also host the opening-night gala on Thursday, December 6.
