“Premiere” Compiles List of Shows That Should Be Movies

July 24, 2007 By Sam Sloan 1 Comment

It’s nothing new for Hollywood to rob the small-screen for the big-screen. It seems as if every “classic” TV series (and even a few non-classics) are being adapted for the big-screen these days.

And with “The Simpsons” being the latest to make the jump and “Family Guy” rumored to be considering a big-screen move, “Premiere Magazine” has compiled a list of ten shows that should be turned into movies. Several of them fall into the ranks of genre shows.

They are:

  • 10. Jericho
  • 9. Prison Break
  • 8. Smallville
  • 7. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip
  • 6. Veronica Mars
  • 5. Heroes
  • 4. Flight of the Conchords
  • 3. Drive
  • 2. Lost
  • 1. Friday Night Lights
  • Actually, Friday Night Lights was a movie before it was adapted for the small-screen.

And I find it interesting that Battlestar Galactica didn’t make the list….

Only the ones with not much existing content would work well as films, for the same reason that “Serenity” worked as a film. Jericho would work because there’s main story threads that can be wrapped up and not an exorbitant amount of backstory to catch people up on. Same for Drive. Smallville and FNL are already in movies. Can’t speak for Studio 60. Prison Break, Veronica Mars and Lost are way to complex and have too much backstory to pay off effectively. Heroes could do it, as long as it was an one-shot story (which Heroes is more than capable of doing thanks to it’s robust format).
