Harry Dresden Magically Disappears

July 11, 2007 By Sam Sloan 22 Comments

Written by: Michael Hickerson (SoSF Staff Journalist)

Bad news for fans of SCI FI’s “The Dresden Files.”

TV Guide’s media reporter and SPOILER expert Michael Ausiello reports in Wednesday’s Ask Ausiello column that sources report the show is “toast.”

No official word either way from the SCI FI Channel on if the series will come back for a second season.

Well, that sucks. Dead bunnies through a garden hose.

I’m still curious about the thinking behind putting Dresden and BSG against ABC’s Sunday night killer line-up. I’m the only SF Geek in the family and, come Sunday night, the big TV was on Desperate Housewives and Brothers and Sisters. Period. I would have been riding the BT WayBack Machine for my weekly DF and BSG fixes if we didn’t have more VCRs, DVRs, and media center PCs then any sane family needs.

but they neeeded the money for lake placid 4 or perhaps manskeeto 2.I think dresden may have been doomed from the start, why else would they play them out of order.the fans like dresden but scifi channel hasn’t got a clue.

Didn’t I see an article on here a little while ago that said something about Dresden Files changing filming locations?

Shouldn’t that mean that we at least have a few episodes (or at least scenes) of season two already.

Somehow I don’t think “toast” is a very offficial word. It sounds much more like an opinion to me.

The article said that “IF” SCI FI renewed Dresden it would be shot in a new location. That is also why the headline ended with a question mark (?).

The Dresden Files was my number one favorite show this year, I really, really hope SciFi does the right thing. There’s not much else on SciFi without it (now that BSG has a firm expiration date).

The program is simply too good to cancel. It has all the right elements (characters, drama, humor…) to succeed.
An excellent demographic base (women) that will attract additional quality viewers (men 18-45).

I do not believe the negative rumor. Is this some kind of expectations game?

I’m really hoping that Sci-Fi listens to the fans on this one. The Dresden Files was one of their best original series. Good plots, snappy dialog, fun characters (Especially Bob!), good acting– it’s hard to believe there’s even a question about renewing it. I’m glad they’re putting out a DVD set. I’d be even happier if they were showing reruns and renewing for future seasons.

Here’s hoping that Ausiello missed the mark this time. Perhaps if folks generate some buzz for it, Sci-Fi will hear. Talk it up, people!

I have been tracking the renewal/cancellation of The Dresden Files myself. I have signed petitions, sent USPS letters and sent emails.
USPS letters are supposed to be better. I have read on other forums that the Sci-Fi channel has software that filters out emails asking for the renewals of shows but that didn’t stop me from trying email.

There is an online petition at
    http://www.dresdenfiles.org/petition/

A fan has a website at
    http://maenad.tripod.com/saveharrydresden/
where you can sign a guest book with comments that will be forwarded to those at Sci-Fi Channel.

They both suggest you send actual letters urging renewal of the Dresden Files to:

    Mark Stern
    Executive VP Original Programming
    NBC Universal/ Sci-Fi Channel
    100 Universal City Plaza
    Bld. 1440, 14th Fl.
    Universal City CA, 91608

    And:

    Bonnie Hammer
    President
    NBC Universal/ Sci-Fi Channel
    30 Rockefeller Plaza
    New York, NY 10112

There has been a lot of discussion about the renewal or cancellation and reasons for such at the forums at the Sci-Fi channel website at
    http://forums.scifi.com/index.php?showforum=101

And, of course, Jim Butcher’s website is at
    http://www.jim-butcher.com/
and his site has a TV Renewal News topic thread in the forum section at
    http://www.jim-butcher.com/bb/index.php?topic=3190.0

I certainly hope that The Dresden Files is renewed.

We received an update of sorts from SciFi saying that a decision has STILL not been made concerning the 2nd Season of the Dresden Files. While this isn’t good news, it DOES give us time to continue writing e-mails & snailmails. What we REALLY need is for everyone to send e-mails to any & all media sites, be it blogs, newspapers, or magazine sites (paper or Net-only)! Get the word out that we want such an excellent show to continue!! And continue to write snailmail letters – we just sent 2 pounds of letters to every one of TPTB of SciFi & NBC/Uni!! Please help us keep the pressure on! Check out our website: dresdencity.org which has updates & links to more information. Pleas help us help each other! 🙂

What a shame it would be if this show disappears. Everyone who watches it seems to find something to enjoy.

I can only surmise that Scifi gets it’s numbers from people who wander by then lose the remote. Surely no one is actually loyal to them since they are so disloyal to the fans.

Something of quality never stood a chance…

Isn’t it a shame when SciFi decides to cancel something worth while. I mean they keep stupid ass shows like Painkiller Jane on and kill great ones like I-Man, Special Unit 2, and who could forget Farscape.

I remember writing tons of letters about Farscape. They just out of the blue poped it off tv all together then finally after a year or so put out a miniseries fanaly. WTF SciFi Channel?

You guys need to get your heads out of your asses and keep the good shows on and I don’t know maybe put up a sheet to see how many people sign it to keep a show on. Listen to your f*cking viewers for a change vs the friken money. At least they brought back Eureka.

sci-fi channel was the only reason why I took a cable subscription… now there is no reason to find at that channel to keep paying for it… if a show is perfect – like dresden is/was – they take it of the air. sorry, sci-fi lost my vote. (dresden isn’t the only show lately!)

Dresden Files was a monolith. Dresden Files was great eabout secrets and powers and entertainment…. but it also was also about secrets and powers and solutions.

There are those that do not want these things talked of…. they exist. Jim Butcher and Nick Cage did their part and for those that try to destroy Harry Dresden, they are just too late.

I want to see the motion picture sequel…. “The Dresden Files: The Wizard Strikes Back”.
