Kelley Picks His Americanized Sam Tyler

June 29, 2007 By Sam Sloan Leave a Comment

jasonomaraprob1b.jpgActor Jason O’Mara, from the critically acclaimed HBO series “Band of Brothers” is David Kelley’s choice to play the lead character of Sam Tyler in his American version of the British television show “Life on Mars.” The irony of this is O’Mara was born in Dublin, Ireland, which means we have a British television show adapted for American TV starring an Irish actor — Welcome to Hollywood.

O’Mara was trained at the British repertory theater which aided him in landing some pretty impressive roles in theaters throughout England and Ireland, including the Royal Shakespeare Company. He moved from stage to the small screen in the UK series “The Bill.” He caught the attention of Tom Hanks who gave him a spot on “Band of Brothers” and the rest, as they say, is history.

In the series “Life on Mars” Tyler, a 21st Century police detective, finds himself stuck in the 1970’s where he becomes obsessed to find a serial killer who was connected to the disappearance of his fiancee’ 30 years into the future — his present — Ouch, my head hurts.

“Life on Mars” is set for the ABC Network’s 2007-2008 mid-season. The female lead had already been cast earlier with actress Rachelle Lefevre. The series will begin shooting in the middle of August.

O’Mara can also be seen in the upcoming big screen feature “Resident Evil: Extinction” with Milla Jovovich. That film is currently in post production and is due to hit theaters on September 21, 2007.
