The graphic novel “Cowboys & Aliens” will get a live-action, big screen treatment from Brian Grazer and Ron Howard. Also on-board to produce the project are Scott Mitchell Rosenberg (creator of “Cowboys & Aliens” graphic novel), the writing team of Alex Kurtzman and Robert Orci (“Transformers,” “Star Trek” [XI]), Ervin Rustemagic and Rich Marincic.
Studios DreamWorks and Universal Pictures will distribute the final product. The graphic novel will be adapted for the screen from a script by Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (both worked on the script for “Children of Men” and “Iron Man”).
“Cowboys & Aliens” is a mix of old Western style novels and the scifi genre set in the Old West Arizona Territory where the local cowboys and a tribe of Apache indians are having it out in true John Wayne fashion when their tussle is interrupted by the crash-landing of an alien spacecraft. After the aliens try to turn humans into slaves, the Native Americans and Cowboys forget their differences, team up and turn their bows and arrows and six-guns on the other-worldly invaders.
