For the first time in almost two months a scifi/fantasy/horror film did not come out on top for a weekend box office. “Spider Man 3” started the trend and was followed by “Shrek the Third” and then “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.”
Now it looks like Danny Ocean and his band of lovable grifters have taken over the top slot with “Ocean’s Thirteen.” The film stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Andy Garcia, Matt Damon and all the actors from the previous two films, minus Julia Roberts. But, one of the reasons this one is expected to do extremely well and certainly better than “Twelve,” is the addition of Al Pacino to the cast. Even Oprah Winfrey, the grand dame, herself makes a cameo in this one.
“Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” moved down one slot to number two followed by the comedy “Knocked Up” still showing strong numbers. The new animated entry “Surf’s Up” hung 10 at number four with “Shrek the Third” rounding out the Top 5.
If the numbers hold before midnight then “Spider Man 3” owns the 8th slot just behind “Mr. Brooks” and the blood gore that is “Hostel: Part II.”
We will have the final tally for the Weekend Top 10 later in the week.

Not Sci-fi?
Have you seen this movie? It has more gimmicks and gadgets and questionable physics than a Star Trek episode.
They fake an earth quake, make dice with some kind of non-detectable non-magnetic material that causes them to “jump” by flicking a zippo open. There is an AI security system, a hack in to the FBI data base, super pheromone, and a bio-chemical attack and a hotel shaped like a double helix (sorta).
I actually liked the movie, but while it may not be SF/F genre, it sure comes close.
