A fan of Slice of SciFi found this article about a certain group of scifi writers and their involvement with the war on terror with the Department of Homeland Security. I thought I would pass it along to everyone… it makes for an interesting read and I found it kinda compelling.
It comes from USA Today. The opening paragraph reads:
“Looking to prevent the next terrorist attack, the Homeland Security Department is tapping into the wild imaginations of a group of self-described ‘deviant’ thinkers: science-fiction writers.”
You can catch the entire Mimi Hall article at the official USA Today Website.

As a confirmed Sci-Fi geek and an employee of DHS, I can say I fully support this effort!
I could have swore I remember reading something like this right after 9/11. I’d like to say it’s a good idea but I think it’s been proven that the government doesn’t listen. I seem to recall another story about an episode of the Lone Gunman where they prevented a plane from crashing into the World Trade Center years before it really happened.
I do find it interesting that Arlan Andrews makes a point of saying that you need at least one doctorate in a technical science to be a member of the group, when two of the five members shown (Niven and Bear) don’t have one…
Brent – Don’t believe everything you read in the papers; that quote was a little off the mark. Maybe on Day One, yes, but not Day Two, still back in late 1992.
Tim — These guys did listen to us, which was the great part. They are both serious and imaginative about saving lives.
