Hollywood’s Herculean Gesture to the Gods

May 31, 2007 By Sam Sloan 1 Comment

2004265.jpgHollywood just loves to copy itself thinking that because one film in a certain genre is successful, why not follow it up with two or three more just like it. Sounds ludicrous, however, past evidence shows they are absolutely right.

After the overwhelming success of the blockbuster film “300,” which dealt with a real ancient historical event but done in fabulized Hollywood fashion, the great minds in the industry, producer Avi Lerner specifically, believe there is more to this Greek obsession and he will be using his Millennium Films production company to bring back one of entertainment’s long trusted sources — Hercules! You heard me right, they’re going to bring the product of a love affair between an Earth woman and a Greek god back to the big screen.

Hercules has been one of Hollywood’s pets going all the way back to the silent era, but was king of box office back in the 1960’s when body-builder Steve Reeves portrayed the half-man/half-god (as well as other heroes of Greek lore) on the silver screen in several popular films.

The 1990’s saw a resurgence of Hercules’ popularity. Disney recaptured the fun of the Greek hero in a well received animated film and Kevin Sorbo (“Andromeda”) brought the legendary god to life in the highly popular television series “Hercules: The Legendary Journeys”.

Sean Hood (“Halloween: Resurrection”) has already written the script, which is being kept more secret than the next Star Trek film’s plot — and that is some serious security.
