This Slice of SciFi Show #111 was recorded LIVE from the famous Balticon in Baltimore, Maryland, so listen for familiar and some new voices who filled the room, as well as lots of fun, pranks, and a party-spirit throughout. A good time was had by all who attended the recording session. Airdate for Show #111 is May 30, 2007.
Even though “Firefly” is off the air and there are no known future plans for a sequel to the popular movie “Serenity,” the international network of Browncoats are still making a difference by showing support for Equality Now, the organisation formed to address the gender disparity in the human rights movement, which sometimes tends to dismiss violations as being “cultural” or “private”. Issues such as domestic violence, rape, female genital mutilation, trafficking, and reproductive rights are not part of the agendas of other established human rights organizations. Equality Now fights for those very important rights and seeks to see them addressed for the sake of all life.
Devin Pike, the organizer for this year’s “Can’t Stop the Serenity 2007” stands in the forefront of those who want to see an end to violence and discrimination, not only against women, but against all of the members of the human race, but particulary those crimes against women and girls around the world. Through the mobilization of public pressure and growing public awareness from such programs as “Can’t Stop the Serenity,” Equality Now is able to raise the monies and attention needed to help thwart these terrible crimes against humanity.
The “Can’t Stop the Serenity 2007” charity event is worldwide and fully supported by Firefly and Serenity creator Joss Whedon, and in his honor, the screenings are scheduled around his birthday, June 23rd.
Our Slice of SciFi Arizona team (Summer Brooks, Mike Mennenga, Brian Brown, and many more), will be supporting and helping the AZ Browncoats with the Tempe screening on June 21, and Summer and Brian will be at the Tucson screening on June 23, so, if you live in these viewing areas come out and join us!
The entire global Slice of SciFi staff, our news director and full team of journalists, are full supporters of this effort and on Show #111 we happily give Devin a platform for making the event known to all our fans, listeners and visitors to our Website.
On the rest of the show we have lots of information about your favorite SF news, movies and TV.

With a show as important as this one, starring Devin Pike and the work of “Can’t Stop the Serenity 2007,” it is important for all fans of Slice of SciFi to give it a listen and pass it on to your friends and family members so they too can see that science fiction is so much more than just a bunch of geeks dressing like their favorite SF character (not that there is anything wrong with that). The world needs to know that we are about so much more than that and our show this week can help make that world-wide effort known.
