Shrek Busts Spidey’s Web-hold on Box Office

May 20, 2007 By Sam Sloan Leave a Comment

The big green ogre left little doubt in anyone’s mind about who is the new King of Box Office. “Shrek the Third” unseated “Spider Man 3” for the top spot and became only the third film ever to show such massive ticket sales in one weekend. Taking in over an estimated $122 million (and the weekend ticket windows are still open for another 9-hours), “Shrek the Third” is first, “Spider Man 3” hangs on to second and the zombie horror flick “28 Weeks Later” clings to third.

While most critics have been less than favorable concerning this third movie, the Shrek film opened in about 200 fewer US theaters than Spidey did on its opening weekend and still amassed huge box office, despite such film critic comments as, “the film relies too heavily on stale flatulence jokes when it gets dry,” or “we’ve seen this before in Shrek 1 and 2”. Obviously fans and other movie goers are ignoring the critics and going to theaters in droves to see “Shrek the Third”.

Slice of SciFi will have the full and final Top Ten box office films for you later this week.
